What Are the Effects of UV Damage to Your Skin
Summer is approaching, and although you are probably excited for sunkissed glistening skin, your skin will be saying otherwise if you are not taking proper precautions. So, with summer coming, we wanted to talk about the damaging effects of U.V. rays.
What Are the Effects of Ultraviolet (U.V.) Exposure To The Skin?
Photoaging
Sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin, and photoaging is different from chronological aging. Some of the first signs of photoaging include; freckling, fine lines and wrinkling, and dilation of capillaries. Typically in the later years, you'll notice photoaged skin develops irregular pigmentation. People who sunbathe regularly show photoaging early in life - often before 30 years of age.
Skin Cancer
Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Avoiding direct exposure to U.V. radiation is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer.
Melanoma
Melanoma is now one of the most common and severe cancers among adolescents and young adults ages 15-29. This form of skin cancer accounts for about three percent of skin cancer cases and causes more than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths. Not all melanomas are sun-related other possible factors include immune system deficiencies and genetic factors.
Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers
Non-melanoma skin cancers are less deadly than melanomas. Nevertheless, they can spread if left untreated, causing disfigurement and more severe health problems. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are two primary types of non-melanoma skin cancers. However, if caught and treated early, these two cancers are rarely fatal.
- Squamous cell carcinomas are tumors that may appear as red, scaly patches and can spread to other parts of the body.
- Basal cell carcinomas are the most common type of skin cancer tumors. They usually appear as small, fleshy bumps on the head and neck, and it rarely spreads to other parts of the body. However, it can penetrate the bone and cause damage.
Why Is Sunscreen So Important?
- Sunscreen helps prevent skin cancers.
