The Effects of Blue Light
The Effects of Blue Light
We have always been informed about the damage blue light
can do to your eyes, but is it just as damaging to your skin?
What is Blue Light?
On the blue end of visible light, blue light is a high- energy, short-wavelength light. Falling within the wavelength of 400 to 450 nanometers, because it is a short wavelength with higher energy output, it can cause greater damage. What’s becoming a concern, is that although sunlight is the biggest source of blue light, the damage can also come from electronic devices such as computer screens, tablets, and of course your phone. We know one thing is for sure, with the amount of time we spend behind a screen which, according to Eminence Organic International Trainer Brian Goodwin, we are “typically exposed to blue light for about six hours a day between your cellphone and computer screen”, it is becoming a big threat to our health and our skin in particular.
The Damage:
In 2010, Academic researchers such as, the Journal of Investigative of Investigative Dermatology found in a peer-reviewed study of the effects of blue light on the skin, that exposing skin to the amount of blue light we get from the sun caused more pigment, redness, and swelling than when the same person’s skin was exposed to equivalent levels of UVA rays. “Visible light, especially in the blue wavelength, has become a hot topic in skin care, as there is mounting evidence that supports its contribution to photo-aging, including wrinkles, worsening skin laxity, and hyperpigmentation,” Shari Marchbein, a board certified Dermatologist and clinical assistant professor at New York University tells allure.
